Letter to All Homebuyer Education Instructors
Thank you for teaching seminars sponsored by the Washington State Housing Finance Commission. With the onset of a new year, we want to take this opportunity to revisit the policies for teaching our seminars if you wish to have your classes sponsored by the Commission.
We’ve received growing complaints over the past couple of months and wanted to bring these issues to your attention. Here are the issues:
- When people have called to register
for a class, the instructor asked if they were already working with
a lender or a real estate professional and if they said yes, then
the instructor responded that the “class was full or
cancelled”. All classes are open to the public, whether or not
they are already working with someone.
- We’ve had new instructors call to
sit-in on a class and be told that the “class is not open to
agents or lenders”.
Once again, all classes are open to the public, including lending
and real estate professionals. We have procedures instructors must
follow if they do want to attend another instructor’s class. If
you’re not sure what the procedures are, please contact Bill Conner.
- People have registered for classes and then find out at the last minute, or sometimes when they arrive for the class, that the class has been cancelled. They have then registered for another class and have had that one cancelled also. If you’ve cancelled a class, be sure to let the Commission know it has been cancelled and more importantly, make sure you’ve contacted anyone who’s already registered that the class has been cancelled. We’ve received numerous complaints that people have taken time off from work, have made child care arrangements and not know the class has been cancelled until they arrived at the class location. We’ve reviewed the number of classes that have been cancelled and it’s obvious that there are way too many classes being scheduled in some areas of the state. Because of this issue, we will be limiting the number of classes an instructor can hold each week. Beginning April 10, instructors will be limited to 2 classes per week, per county. A 2-day class (5 hours total) counts as one class. We feel this change will result in much fewer cancellations, which means class participants won’t be running around trying to find a class after last minute cancellations.
We are following-up on all complaints and instructors who are not following these rules will not be eligible any longer to teach Commission sponsored homebuyer education seminars.
Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
Most of you do a great job and we thank you for all the work you do in educating over 10,000 potential homebuyers in the state each year!
